A casino developer who admitted offering millions in bribes to Alabama legislators is trying to avoid spending more than 20 years in prison by portraying himself as someone who was naive about politics but is a business visionary who can create jobs if he's not behind bars. Country Crossing casino developer Ronnie Gilley has filed court papers asking U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson not to give him the sentence of 21 to 27 years that was outlined in his plea agreement. "Just punishment would be achieved in this case with a sentence of supervised release and community service," Gilley's lawyer wrote in court papers filed Thursday and Friday. Gilley, a 47-year-old real estate developer, built Country Crossing, a made-from-scratch small gambling town on the outskirts of Dothan, in 2009. In 2010, Gilley, VictoryLand casino owner Milton McGregor, and others were indicted on charges of promising millions in campaign contributions and other benefits to buy and sell votes in the Legislature.
